In Japan rhinoceros beetles (kabutomushi) symbolize many different things, chief among them are strength, perseverance, and summer. During the summertime, it is common to see these creatures sold in department stores to be kept as pets or to have them battle on logs for the entertainment of kids for generations. So to me, I envisioned the kabutomushi as a symbol of summertime and youthful shenanigans.
